This month we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. I’m sure you can probably pinpoint the time and place you heard the news that shocked our nation. Just a couple of years ago, Lindsey and I walked the path of the plane that went down just miles from our little corner. This was a sobering experience to see the list of names and rehearse the wreckage that took place. New York City has recently opened a museum with artifacts, anecdotes, and artwork honoring that day in history. Recently, I heard a radio program discussing the details of this […]

The last few passages in Luke have been a continual reminder that there is nothing we can do to reach heaven on our own. Try as men might to gain eternal life, whether through works or his own goodness, it is just not possible. Sin has left us as a corpse and we are in desperate need for life (Eph. 2:1-9). If I am traveling someplace new I need directions. Some people have a navigation sense about them. That is not me. You can ask my wife. On one of our first dates I was completely convinced we were headed in the right direction before she kindly pointed out that we had been headed in the wrong direction of Philadelphia for a few blocks. You can bet that if we are taking a trip together, we have the GPS on, printed directions in hand, and our google map app on stand-by. Getting lost usually isn’t a whole lot of fun, especially […]

Why would someone buy a pet parrot? Is it the beautiful colors? Is it an inner desire to live the life of a pirate with Polly perched on a shoulder? My guess is that the draw for most people is this bird’s uncanny ability to mimic words. A parrot can listen to what is said, memorize, and repeat it. This fascinating trick draws lots of attention and accolades for the bird’s apparent intelligence. I wonder though, do parrots ever think deeply on what is being said? Do they take the words of their owner’s and meditate deeply on their meaning? […]

A Sign for Walking Through Uncertainty

There’s a sign that hangs near our table at home with the words of Micah 6:8 on it. “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God…” Lindsey and I found this sign on a Momentum youth conference trip a couple of years ago. We were both in a time of uncertainty, wondering what God was specifically asking of us to do and He graciously gave us a sign (literally). There are often times when I feel as […]
